What To Bring To Rehabilitation

Allowable Things To Bring Inside The Treatment Facility

Going to rehab isn't exactly a vacation but it pays to know what to bring and what things are permitted inside the treatment facility.

Some items are prohibited in the rehab centres. A recommended packing list is provided by most centres, which also provide you with a list of items that are prohibited.

You will be required to check in after you arrive at the rehab and begin the process for the admission. During this time, the admissions team belonging to the centres will inspect your belongings to ensure safety and to understand whether any prohibited items are also included. Many inpatient facilities record the stuff you bring in their database in order to ensure none of your stuff is left behind when you check out.

Some are only allowing bare necessities into the facility. Every clinic has rules on additional items.

How To Find Information About What To Bring

Have a look at the "What to Bring" section of your clinic's website you don't know what is allowed and prohibited or queries about packing. Search for the FAQ page if that section is not present. Many centres give their future patients a packing checklist which you can refer to. Alternatively, you can get in touch directly with the rehab administrators. They will let you know of all the items. At the same time, they can walk you through and guide you on what to expect prior, during and after admission.

The Things That Are Necessities In Many Rehabs

The policy of every rehab centre is different, and some can be expected to be stricter than the others.

Majority of centres advise patients to bring these:

  • Names, contact information, and addresses of people you want to be notified or involved in the process whenever required.
  • Jewellery that means the most value to you just like an engagement or wedding ring.
  • Other items can just be left at home.
  • An alarm clock without a radio.
  • It is important to get in touch with the rehab clinic before as some of them provide these objects.
  • The medications that the patient will be using.
  • If you are taking a liquid drug, the bottle must be sealed.
  • You are also allowed to carry a list of all your medications along with the dosages required.
  • Minimum amount of cash in cases where vending machines or in-house stores are accessible.
  • Your check book, credit or debit card for therapy medication expenses.
  • Your insurance cards along with a method of identification [driver's license, passport, etc.].
  • A phone card (when your clinic needs them for international phone calls).
  • Your personal journal.
  • Stamps and envelopes for mailing letters if you wish to.
  • Photos of your family members and friends.
  • There are some items that you will get inside the rehab.
  • Most of the items that are allowed should play some part in the recovery process.
  • Small notebook are the best since they are not heavy.

What Type Of Clothing Is Necessary

Some centres have prescribed dress codes or limitations that you have to consider. If you are not sure about how to pack for the weather, you should be looking forward to packing layering options like T-shirts, sweaters, cardigans and jackets.

This however does not mean that you should carry your whole closet.

Patients enjoy access to common laundry machines and therefore clothing that will last you for 7-10 days will be more than enough. Try not to bring clothes which require special washing like dry cleaning for example.

You should carry along about seven days of comfortable and with appropriate clothing, including the following:

  • Shoes: Regular everyday shoes, sports shoes, and shower shoes.
  • Shirts: For slightly revealing articles, you may bring cardigans or pullovers to cover it to avoid dress code policy issues.
  • Pants: Comfortable pants fit for any occasion
  • Shorts: The dress code of the centres will determine the length of the shorts.
  • A dress or two for any special events like appreciation or family night.
  • Socks.
  • Undergarments.
  • Bathing suit: Choose one-piece suits for woman and trunks for men.
  • Pyjamas.
  • A Jacket/Coat.
  • A bathrobe.
  • A belt.
  • A hat.
  • Slippers.

Hygiene And Cosmetic Products You Should Bring

Majority of rehabs allow only alcohol-free hygiene and cosmetic products. While other centres may allow you to bring products with alcohol component as long as it is not listed as one of the top three ingredients. No aerosols are allowed.

You should be taking along 30-day requirements of toiletries and beauty products, including:

  • Deodorant
  • A toothpaste and toothbrush
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Hair styling products (pump hair spray only)
  • Comb/brush
  • Feminine care products
  • Shaving cream
  • Lotion
  • Sunscreen
  • Makeup

Items That Are Prohibited In Rehab

Almost all treatment centres have a list of forbidden items and they enforce a set of rules. These items don't guarantee the proper surroundings for your retrieval and aren't safe Please find below the list of objects that are forbidden, it may be different from clinic to clinic:

  • Alcohol as well as drugs
  • Opiates and other medicines
  • Sharp tools
  • Unsuitable videos
  • Foods and drinks
  • Personal hygiene and beauty products that have alcohol (mouthwash, colognes, etc.)
  • E-cigarettes
  • Medications that are not prescribed
  • Volatile substances like nail polish or polish remover and the likes
  • Computer games
  • Sport equipment
  • Clothing that is not descent
  • Aerosols
  • Ammonia, bleach, and other stuff used in cleaning
  • Electronics [televisions, gaming consoles, etc.]
  • Games and playing cards
  • Candles and incense
  • Clothing with profanity or references to drugs, alcohol or violence

Games and playing cards, video games and DVDs, and sporting apparatus may leave you wondering. However, the items are prohibited with the intention to help you to avoid distractions and to provide you an opportunity to remain focused on your recovery. The centre houses most such items and you will enjoy access to them as per the guidelines of your centre.

You will also find that food from outside and drinks are banned because the centres maintain a moderate sugar and caffeine environment. You will be given three meals per day, snacks, and drinks You will have to inform the centre if you have any special dietary requirements or allergies.

These Items Are Allowed By Some But Prohibited By Others

Because policies differ from centre to centre, it is possible to find that some items are allowed in one and not in another. The list below includes items that are permitted by some centres:

  • Your Laptop and Smartphone
  • In case you have this permission in your rehab, chances are your access to it is limited.
  • Just make sure that your chargers and power cords are brought with you.
  • Cigarettes
  • You may be allowed to smoke at some time.
  • Although you have this privilege, you are limited to a number of specified quantities allowed.
  • Vitamins and OTC Medications
  • OTC medications should be brand new.
  • Chewing gum
  • Gums too should be unopened and sealed during admission.
  • Music Players
  • Any electronic devices with no internet connectivity features are also allowed.
  • Cameras
  • Cameras are allowed by some treatment centres.
  • Shaving Equipments
  • This though is largely not admitted in most centres.
  • Disposable razors, however, are more often than not allowed.
  • Nail Clippers
  • Nail clippers may be banned by some centres, but this is not a common habit.
  • Things That Remind You Of Home
  • The rehabs allow you to come with things that will make you feel as comfortable as possible just like you are at home.
  • Don't pack any of these objects without contacting your clinic first.

Can I Have Prohibited Items Back Later On

It is possible that by mistake you pack something that is not allowed, but you should not worry in case this happens. The forbidden objects that you carried to the clinic will be given back to the person who took you there. In case you came alone, the centre might hold the item for a certain period of time, during which someone from your family can collect it. It is possible that the centre might store the item till your release day.

If you are traveling from a distant location and are arriving by air it is likely that you will not have a loved one with you during the admission to take the prohibited items back. You should check with the centre what items are allowed and what are not before packing. You will wish to have back your forbidden objects packed by error. In case they do not do temporary safe keeping, then inquire if they can facilitate shipment to someone you know.

Make Packing For Rehab Simple If you have all the information from the rehab, this process becomes less hectic. They always have documents that give details of this information. Don't pack too many things; only carry things you need.
